David G. Burder lives in London and shoots 3-D photography.
Rick and Susan Sammon live in Croton-on-Hudson, New York and
write about nature subjects (they shoot 3-D photography too).
When you put them together you get an irresistible set of
kids books for The Nature Company.
These were the first projects we worked on where we had to
do all color correction wearing special 3-D glasses. It was
a hit around the office. We also had to devise a pouch for
the back of the book that could hold the glasses when not
in use. These books involved a number of other unusual design
considerations The covers can't use the special 3-D
technology because the viewer in a retail setting will not
be wearing the glasses and without the glasses the photographs
look terrible. The solution: a simulated 3-D effect in the
type. The glasses had a tendency to quickly disappear in the
store (they are pretty neat all by themselves). The solution:
the display copies had the glasses tied to a string that was
bound into the spine of the book.
