Okay. Right up front let's be clear that this project had
nothing to do with alfalfa, or any other agricultural subject
either. The Alfalfa Club is a group of political and other
heavyweights who gather once a year at a dinner that may have
the most impressive guest list ever seen. Presidents and Vice
Presidents—both current and former—attend, as
do Senators, Ambassadors, Governors, corporate titans, famous
pundits... the list goes on and on.
Every year the club inducts a new group of “sprouts”
who are introduced at a hilarious roast emceed by former Congressman
James Symington. As he approached his 25th year as the “crop
reporter,” the club decided to produce a commemorative
collection of his “reports.” We got the honor
of designing and producing this fun book.
Visually this is an example of how you can make the most
of a single image. We commissioned a painting from Gail McIntosh
that shows Mr. Symington in a straw boater set at a rakish
angle, with a bucolic farm scene and Washington D.C. in the
background (the scene prominently features—you guessed
it—alfalfa). The painting makes a great cover and is
also used inside on the divider page for each year's class.
A repeating alfalfa leaf on the end sheets rounds out the
visual joke.
