Silver Rin Splint - Simple, elegant, straightforward... but very impressive
Silver Rin Splint - Simple, elegant, straightforward... but very impressive

Jim considers it one of the luxuries of being in business for himself that he can so directly support great causes and products. In this case a small company in Charlottesville, Virginia manufactures a product that makes a world of difference to their customers. People who suffer from osteoarthritis and other hand problems need to wear splints to give their joints back the firmness that they once had. Without splints many of them would not be able to hold a pencil or play a musical instrument. In the bad old days these splints were bulky, ugly, plastic-and-gauze things that made the wearers’ hands a pretty scary-looking affair. Silver Ring’s splints are more effective than the old splints and look like such cool jewelry that we've heard stories of a 16 year old girl, suffering from no known hand problems, who asked her parents if they would buy her some. One of the customer letters that warmed our hearts was from a grandmother who said that before using these new splints her grandchildren found her hands so scary they wouldn’t come near her. This web site is one part of a whole suite of identity materials GDA produced for Silver Ring including a catalog, a trade show booth, stationery, and product boxes.

The Power of a Strong Identity

Before producing a web site for Silver Ring, Gibson Design produced a graphic identity for the company. This was a chance to rework the identity of the company from the ground up. We developed a symbol that illustrates the patented double-ring construction of the company’s primary product, and then we paired it with a distinctive typographic treatment of the company’s name. We chose an Adobe typeface called Hiroshige that contains some of the beauty and energy of Japanese calligraphy. When we first showed the company name in this face it struck everyone as being perfect. It’s hard to completely explain the type selection process, since it is only half logical, with the other half being a deep—almost intuitive—awareness of the suggestions and overtones a particular typeface has accrued over the years. Somehow the strokes and energy of Hiroshige beautifully express both the simplicity and beauty of Silver Ring’s product.
