CHS Orchestra European Tour--July 7 to 17, 1998

July 8, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: Arrival in Frankfurt, Germany (Lufthansa group) and Munich, Germany (Delta group). Short panoramic bus tour of Munich, including King's Square, the Royal Residence, Opera, Parliament, and the 1982 Olympic Village. Welcome dinner at the Hofbrauhaus and overnight in Munich.

Frankfurt to Munich

From Frankfurt it is a short 45-minute flight to Munich. We discover that the ever-so-carefully packed cellos did not make it on either of our flights. We start a trace to find out where the HAVE landed, and to see how quickly we can get them into our hands. Lucie Vogel checks out the rented basses and pronounces them fine instruments all, even though two are inexplicably packed in blankets. In Munich the weather is so changeable it goes from sunny and cool at the airport to much colder, blustery, and rainy at the hotel. We unpack the luggage in the rain and hear the reassuring word that the cellos have been found and will join us soon.

Exploring Munich

After a much needed, restorative, nap break at the hotel we set out to explore the wonders of Munich. Our destination: the Marienplatz, a beautiful pedestrian area in the heart of the city. Everywhere we turn we see magnificent architecture and thriving street life. After some individual exploration time we head to the Hofbrauhaus, for dinner (and, as it turned out... some dancing).

Beautiful architecture is to be found at every turn in Munich. Our bus ride takes us past the Munich Public Bathhouse, still used for that purpose today.

Michael White on the Marienplatz. "You going to put this on the web where everyone can see it?" "Yup." "Cool."

Caitlen Kell, Lindsey Barlow, and Pam on the plaza in the Marienplatz. Live cancan girls, on-stage to the left, are being projected many times life-size above their heads

Emily Gibson looks a little too eager to spend the evening in Munich's most famous beer-hall. It was, nevertheless, a completely soft-drink night for CHS.

The Oom-pah band is playing when we enter, and still going strong when we leave two hours later.

A very brave Bryan Stone is recruited to do a star turn dressed in lederhosen in front of the crowd of about 600 from all around the world

Bryan catches on quick

Many in our group join in the dancing festivities

The surprise ending to the evening was the band playing "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy" on the hand bells

A very tired group returns to the hotel at about 11 pm (Munich time--who knows what time it "really" is) and crashes for some much needed rest. Tomorrow we rise early to travel to Salzburg and a tour of "Crazy Ludwig's castle."
