The Charlottesville High School Orchestra is touring Europe from July 7 until July 17, 1998. Click any date below to read an overview of the events on that day. Information will be added to these pages as the tour progresses.

TUESDAY, JULY 7, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: Departure from Dulles Airport at 5:45 pm (Lufthansa group) and National airport at 4:55 pm (Delta group). These are overnight flights.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: Arrival in Frankfurt, Germany (Lufthansa group) and Munich, Germany (Delta group). Short panoramic bus tour of Munich, including King's Square, the Royal Residence, Opera, Parliament, and the 1982 Olympic Village. Welcome dinner at the Hofbrauhaus and overnight in Munich.

THURSDAY, JULY 9, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: Visit to Neuschwanstein Castle, built by "Crazy" Ludwig II, King of Bavaria. Drive along the Bavarian Alps to Salzburg, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Overnight in Salzburg.

FRIDAY, JULY 10, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: Walking tour of the old inner city of Salzburg. Tour of the birthplace of Mozart; the 17th-century Residenzplatz, the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter, and many of the filming sites from the movie "The Sound of Music." Late afternoon departure for Hallstatt and concert in the Hallstatt Congress Center. Overnight in Salzburg.

SATURDAY, JULY 11, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: Travel to Vienna. Stop at St. Florian, best know as the Abbey where Anton Bruckner was organist for 10 years. Opening ceremony at the Austria Center Vienna. Welcome dance party at the Austria Center Ballroom for all festival participants from all over the world.

SUNDAY, JULY 12, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: The Adjudication Concert at the Austria Center Vienna. Evening concert at the Votivkirche, a beautiful twin-steepled church built in 1856 in gratitude for the failure of an assassination attempt on Emperor Franz Joseph.

MONDAY, JULY 13, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: Morning city sightseeing tour of Vienna, including sites along and within the "Ringstrasse:" the Vienna State Opera, the Hofburg Palace, the Museum of Fine Arts and Natural History, the Parliament, and the City Hall. The highlight of the tour will be the royal apartments of the magnificent 1400-room Schonbrunn Palace.

TUESDAY, JULY 14, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: The Matinee of winners, where the prize-winning ensembles from the Adjudication Concert will perform again. Judges will award special trophies to the best groups in each category. Farewell party at the Weiner Rathauskeller. Last night in Vienna.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 15, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: Six and a half hour drive to Prague through the Bohemian countryside. Dinner and overnight in Prague.

THURSDAY, JULY 16, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: City tour of Prague including Old Town, the Hradcany complex (residence of the president of the republic), and St. Veits Cathedral. Concert at the main church in Krabcice, 30 kilometers outside of Prague. A welcome will be given by Mr. Erdinger, who is very excited to have an orchestra from the US play in his village. Farewell dinner and overnight in Prague.

FRIDAY, JULY 17, 1998

SCHEDULED EVENTS: Depart Prague at 11:10 am (Delta). Arrive at JFK in New York 4:00 pm. Depart JFK at 5:30 pm. Arrive at National Airport in Washington DC at 7:10 pm.
