Welcome
to Salzburg! After a tasty dinner at the K&K StieglBrau
(photo right), we are anticipating a quiet evening back at
our hotel :) What a wonderful day we had at the
Neuschwanstein Castle today. The Disney World Castle was
modeled after this castle, built by crazy King Ludwig in the
late 1800s. Some of us hiked up the steep grade to the
castle; others took horse and buggy rides, and still others
took a short bus ride. We had a panoramic view of the
Bavarian Alps and had fun choosing where to eat lunch. Some
students were lucky enough to find (German?) spaghetti and
French fries. We enjoyed a four-hour bus ride to Salzburg,
and passed through many picturesque villages before crossing
the border into Austria. For those of you who haven't heard
from your kids--no news is good news! We had two uneventful
plane rides and even enjoyed a police escort out of
Charlottesville. After one luggage mishap (now solved) we
checked into a beautiful, modern hotel in Munich. The kids
were tired but excited. We went to a German "beer" (coke!)
hall for dinner and an oom-pah show. Many of you have
probably heard of the Hofbrauhaus--many students even
participated in the musical numbers--they especially liked
the chicken dance. We had a wonderful extensive breakfast at
the hotel this morning before heading to the castle.
Yesterday was rainy and cold; today was
sunny and cool, and tonight it's raining again! Tomorrow we
explore Salzburg and perform our first concert.
